Appointed Person TrainingThe Appointed Person training course is a five-day programme for people who will be in charge of lifting operations. 

Individuals wanting to improve their skill set, as well as groups of employees and other groups, can benefit from this training. This course has entrance criteria and culminates in a one-day exam at the conclusion of the course.

Participant Requirements

Any participant in the Appointed Person Training course must have passed a CITB health, safety, and environment test no more than two years prior to the course completion date. 

Participants should have the abilities to satisfy the 7121 Safe Use Of Cranes standard, and because reading manufacturer manuals and safety warnings will be required, all candidates should have a strong grasp of written and spoken English. Because of the nature of the job and the content of the course, the participant should be comfortable working at a height.

What Are The Main Responsibilities Of An Appointed Person?

An appointed person’s specific responsibilities differ depending on their job and the organisation they work for. However, in most cases, a designated person will be in charge of conducting risk assessments, selecting the appropriate crane and lifting accessories, and assessing site conditions. Because of these duties, the course is best suited to people who have prior expertise with lifting and crane operation.

Who Should Take The Appointed Person Course?

The appointed person training is designed for managers and supervisors who will be in charge of crane and other lifting equipment operations. Operators can also take the course if they want to demonstrate a greater variety of skills and expertise for a specific employment role.

Course Objectives

The goal of this course is for applicants to receive a CPCS Trained Operator Card (red card). This card verifies that the bearer possesses the abilities necessary to execute the task in a safe and efficient manner, and it can pave the way for the successful acquisition of the blue operator’s card. It guarantees that the cardholder is competent of conducting and agreeing on risk assessments, determining the safety of utilising a lift, and selecting and operating the appropriate equipment. An Appointed Person’s obligations will be clear to the cardholder.

What Will Participants Learn?

Participants will be taught the following:

  • Relevant regulations and legislation including LOLER, HASAWA and PUWER
  • BS7121 codes of practice
  • Lifting operator roles and responsibilities
  • How to read and use lifting equipment documentation and certificates
  • An understanding of different types of crane
  • Crane stability according to prevailing ground conditions
  • Sling angles
  • Safe Working Loads (SWLs) and Related Capacity Indicators (RCIs)
  • Assessment and selection of the correct lifting accessories
  • Planning a lifting operation
  • Conducting a risk assessment and writing a method statement

Course Specifics

The Appointed Person training course is a five-day programme that comprises four days of theory and practise and one day of evaluation and testing. The two-year validity of the red card is shown. A candidate who possesses a red card is eligible to train for a blue card, which has a five-year recertification term.
